As a Bay Area home theater buff, you’re hoping to find a fantastic, vivid, watchable LED television. Whether you’re pricing high end units ($5,000 or above) or cheap but reliable models, here are three options to consider to help you make an effective, simple decision.
Awesome Quality Visuals — the Sony KDL–HX850
This is a great “living room TV” — it’s big and vivid enough (awesome picture quality) for the most discerning A/V-o-phile, but it’s also tough and durable. There’s Gorilla Glass on the front, and the picture boasts uniformity, high detail, and almost zero blooming. Bottom line: If you’re one of those people who is “not into” plasmas, for whatever reason, the Sony KDL-HX850 is a rocking alternative. The downsides: it is on the pricey side, and it does blue shift a bit.
Energy Efficiency, Zero Blooming: the Sharp Elite PRO-X5FD LED
According to the CNET editors, this Sharp LED beats out all other plasma and LED TVs out there for contrast and richness of black levels. The picture looks great from multiple angles — not just from one very particular viewing spot. That’s great if you host parties or have a large family.
The TV is extremely energy efficient. It comes with 3D glasses (!) as well as basket upon basket of cool features. The one big downside is the steep price. The upside is that picture quality is outstanding. CNET editors rated this Sharp Elite as the second best overall quality of any TV reviewed over the past five years.
A Great Value and Tons of Functionality — the VIZIO E320i
This 32 inch LED offers rock solid quality, responsiveness, and nice color. If you’re looking for integrated smart features, this is worth the money. It is, at heart, a “starter unit,” however, and critics ding it for discoloration, clunky interface design, and issues with picture.
